Five Easy First Words to Practice at Home

First words are often connected to the people, objects, and routines children experience most often. That is why everyday words can be a wonderful place to begin. Instead of choosing a long list, focus on a few simple words and repeat them naturally throughout the day.

Try words such as more, up, ball, mama, and bye-bye. These words are easy to connect with real actions and objects. For example, during snack time you can say, “More banana?” When playing with a ball, you can say, “Ball goes up!” When leaving the house, you can wave and say, “Bye-bye!”

Use gestures, facial expressions, and pointing to help make the meaning clear. Your child may not say the word right away, and that is okay. Looking at the object, reaching for it, pointing, or making a sound can all be part of communication.

Keep the experience fun and relaxed. Children learn best when words are connected to things they enjoy. A few familiar words practiced often can create a strong foundation for future conversations.
